Swan Song

Our final meeting as the Dorian Singers took place at Trimley St Martin Primary School. Yes, it was sad, but uplifting as well. Here are some photographs which, I hope, will give you a flavour of what was, in its way, an enjoyable evening.

The Dorians’ last song

Farewell …

Dorians and friends, we have some sad news.

Brian Latchem, our musical director, has had to resign due to health concerns, and

Jean Shaw, our beloved chairman, is moving to Shropshire to be nearer her family. Our secretary, Annabel Cameron, who also serves as Librarian, will be relocating to Italy this year.

Our membership has reduced by half since the pandemic, and we have failed to attract new members.

Because of this, the Dorian Singers met at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 29th January, and voted to disband.

Such monies as we hold will be distributed among four charities; our nominated charity for the year, EACH, plus three others.

Thank you, from our hearts, for your support and generosity over 43 years of music making.

Christmas is coming!

Halloween has trick-or-treated its way past, and, as the last of the fireworks whooshes into the sky we look forward to our Christmas concert. Once again, it will be at Trinity Methodist Church and at 3.00 in the afternoon – so much easier for planning your hectic Yuletide schedule. Get your tickets from members of the choir or from the Card Centre and look forward to a wonderful selection of carols and Christmas music!

Sunday 8th December, 3.00 pm, Trinity Methodist Church – put it in your diary now!

Summer is i-cumen in!

Sun is shining, birds are singing … and so are The Dorian Singers!

By the time you read this the Dorian Singers will have started rehearsals for their Summer Concert. This will be held on Saturday 29th June 2024 at 7.30pm in Kirton Church Hall. Not only will there be some lovely light choral music for a summer evening but there will be the traditional strawberries and cream with wine or soft drinks during the interval.

The choir will be singing a delightful selection of popular music including folk songs, musical shows (The Wizard of Oz and Carousel) and well known songs like The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

There will also be Hattie Bennett’s Champagne String Quartet playing pieces related to summer and sunshine.

Tickets are £12 (under 18’s £3) including refreshments and will be available from The Card Centre, 6 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe IP11 7AU (01394 283170), from choir members, or at the door.

Come and join us for a lovely summer evening of enjoyable music.

From our Musical Director

Following a very successful Christmas concert the Dorian Singers are now busy rehearsing for their Easter Concert. This will take place at Trinity Methodist Church on Saturday 23rd March at 7.00pm. (Please note the earlier starting time) The concert will be in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The choir will be singing several pieces that are new to them including The Magnificat by Pergolesi and The Procession of Palms by Malcolm Williamson, an Australian composer, who became Master of the Queen’s Music in 1975 until his death in 2003. We shall also be performing The Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams. Alan Loader, our previous conductor, will be singing the solo in this very popular work.

There will also be shorter popular pieces interspersing the major works of this concert.

Tickets cost £12 (under 18’s £3) including refreshments and are available from The Card Centre, 6 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe IP11 7AU (01394 283170), from choir members, or at the door.

Come and join us for a lovely evening of enjoyable music.

New Year, new programme!

Rehearsals start tonight! Trimley St Martin Primary School at 7.15 is the place to be.

Our next concert is on Saturday 23rd March 2024 at 7.00 pm in Trinity Methodist Church, Felixstowe. The main works are The Magnificat by Pergolesi, Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams and the Procession of Palms by Malcolm Williamson.

We are always looking for new singers to join us: the more the merrier. There is no audition but an ability to read music would be helpful.
